In January 2023, I got laid off.
I was an Agile Delivery Lead at a Fortune 500 company. The job family got cut. I went with it.
Two weeks later I had a new offer.
Not because I got lucky. Because for years I had been building skills that lived outside my job title. Jira automation. AI integration. Systems that ran without me. Things I could prove — not just describe.
That moment taught me something I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since:
Your title is rented. Your skills are owned.
And in the age of AI — the gap between those two things is everything.
What This Show Is
Career Optional is the show about building the skills that make employment a choice — not a lifeline.
Whether you want to stay corporate and become the person nobody can afford to cut — or build something of your own with AI as your co-founder — the path starts in the same place.
I’m Danny. I’m a Jira and AI architect. I’ve spent 20 years in tech — banking, payments, pharma — and I’ve watched the shift happen in real time. The people who survive aren’t the ones who knew the most about the framework. They’re the ones who built the system underneath it.
That’s what this show is about.
How It Works
Monday through Thursday, you’ll hear AI-scripted episodes. I write the frameworks, the arguments, the ideas. An AI voice delivers them. Tight. Efficient. No filler.
Friday is me. Unscripted. My actual take on the week — what I’m seeing, what I’m building, what changed my mind. The human layer on top of everything the week surfaced.
I built the show this way on purpose. Because this is the Career Optional thesis made tangible. One person. AI doing the heavy lifting. Human judgment steering the whole thing.
